Zanzibar through despite Malawi loss

Zanzibar progressed to their 3rd straight CECAFA Cup quarter-finals despite a 2-0 loss to Malawi. The non-FIFA side went through as the best 3rd-placed team and their qualification was assured earlier in the day when Sudan and Somalia both lost in group B.

Perhaps the fact Zanzibar knew they’d made the last 8 had an effect on their mentality as they found themselves 2 goals down after just 6 minutes. Needing a point to seal their own progress Malawi poured forward from the start and after 3 minutes midfielder Ndaziona Chatsalir fired them ahead. The FIFA side continued to attack and only 6 minutes in they were awarded a penalty, which striker Chiukepo Msowoya confidently dispatched. From thereon in both sides seemed happy to settle with the result as they conserved their energy, both knowing they’d be making quarter-final appearances.

The non-FIFA side now take on Burundi on Monday afternoon in the last 8. The FIFA side topped group B with maximum points but Zanzibar are unbeaten in their last 3 games against Les Hirondelles, comfortably winning 3-0 when they met most recently in 2009. The game kicks-off at 16:00 (13:00 U.K) and updates will be available via our Twitter service @NonFIFAFootball.
